In November 1933, Hitler said your child belongs to us already. The quote is authentic — Nuremberg document 2455-PS — and the mechanism behind it is what Proposition 212 builds toward.
In November 1933, during the campaign for the 12 November Reichstag election, Adolf Hitler said something about children that was entered into evidence at Nuremberg as document 2455-PS and read into the record on 23 November 1945.
“When an opponent declares, "I will not come over to your side, and you will not get me on your side," I calmly say: "Your child belongs to us already. A people lives forever. What are you? You will pass on. Your descendants, however, now stand in the new camp. In a short time they will know nothing else but this new community."”
This is not from Hermann Rauschning's reconstructed conversations. Rauschning admitted in 1971 that those were not reliable, and we do not use them. This quote is from the trial record.
What the sentence means
Hitler was not announcing a new law. He was stating a theory of power: the state forms the next generation, and parents who resist are temporary. The mechanism that followed was documented in statute — centralize the ministry, purge dissenting teachers, standardize the curriculum, occupy the hours outside school, then let alternatives die of attrition.
The comparison is a narrow one, and it is worth stating exactly. Arizona in 2026 is not Germany in 1938, and Prop 212's sponsors are not Nazis. What the Fascist Education Act shares with that record is a category of machinery: consolidate control over how children are educated, and the alternatives shrink.
Why liberals answered this in 1925 and 1948
The generation that defeated fascism did not leave the question open. In Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925), a unanimous Supreme Court struck down an Oregon law backed by the Ku Klux Klan that would have required nearly all children to attend public school. In 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights said parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education given to their children.
Those answers exist because people who had watched the machinery operate knew what state monopoly over schooling enables — including for the far right, the day after they win.
